New studies in the New England Journal of Medicine may soon change the way we're taught how to save lives. The studies say "hands-only" chest compression CPR, in the case of a heart attack on an adult, is enough, without mouth-to-mouth.

Eva Holmes with the Southwest Regional CPR Training Center says over the years, the way we teach CPR has changed, but something that hasn't is that often strangers don't want to resuscitate people they don't know, "especially in the days of aids, hepatitis, some of the diseases that float round out there". She, and other experts hope now with the hands-only method, more bystanders are more willing to jump in to help.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department says they've already started implementing the new method.

Fire Medical Analyst Ken Hughlett says hard and fast compressions, no breathing necessary, is just as successful in saving a life, "The new study is just confirmation that this method does work."

It's important to note, before you start CPR, always call 9-1-1 so they can get on their way, and if someone was drowning, choking, or if it's a child, or baby, it's still crucial to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
