The newest addition to a Southern Colorado family has a need for speed.

Meggan Gerdis believes it took less than 15 minutes to deliver her baby, Alexus, on Saturday, July 24.

"[Doctors] say sometimes [deliveries] go quicker, so I guess they do," Meggan said.

That's about the amount of time it took Meggan's boyfriend to drive them to Memorial Hospital when the baby was coming.

"I told him, 'Don't pay attention to any noise I make,'" said Meggan.

Meggan's boyfriend parked and ran in for help, but Alexus wouldn't wait.

"By the time we had hit the valet parking area, I told him to go get help, you have to go get a nurse. I'm not going to make it inside," Meggan said.

Meggan went to the hospital when her contractions began, but was sent home until they got closer together. Meggan waited until 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Alexus joined the family about 30 minutes later in the front seat of the family's Buick. Meggan wrapped her in a blanket and was soon receiving medical care in the hospital.

In a written statement, Memorial Hospital representatives said they regret that Meggan's experience went the way it did, going on to say the hospital remains dedicated to providing the highest quality health care for the community.

Despite Alexus' rushed arrival, mom and baby are doing just fine.

The hospital is apologizing because it sent her home.. I had all three of my babies at Memorial.. The staff there is wonderful. l would have had my third baby in the car if they had sent me home like they considered.. You never know how long it will take to have a baby. Sometimes its so fast you dont know what hit you.. Congrats on your precious new baby. she is adorable!!!

How was this Memorial's fault again? Valet parking instead of the ER? I can imagine the boyfriend was rattled, but that's not the hospital's fault.

This is why we need to keep hospitals open and not sell them. They are all so short staffed now, that they are making calls like this. What happens when the new bill changes things, and even more people need care?
