Snow is expected to develop for our Monday afternoon and overnight hours. Bands of heavier snow are possible..and something we will be monitoring throughout the day today. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for far northern El Paso County where ~4" are possible by Tuesday morning. Also ahead, a High Wind Watch for much of southeast Colorado from 4-11am Tuesday morning as wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph. (Colorado Springs-AP) -- Zoos are taking steps to protect birds of prey after an eagle at the Pueblo Zoo was infected with the West Nile virus.
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs is giving about 24 birds a vaccine normally used for horses. The zoo is also vaccinating its two mountain tapirs and two elephants.
The Denver Zoo is vaccinating raptors, flamingos, cranes and penguins next spring. It vaccinated its equines, including zebras, horses and donkeys months ago.
West Nile is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, but there have been no human cases in Colorado. At least 84 horses and 12 birds have been infected with West Nile and at least 19 horses have died as the virus spreads.
