Lead Paint Concerns

A decades-old problem is forcing an early childhood development program to find a new home, at least temporarily. The reason: lead-based paint in the building and in the soil outside.

The contamination was found at Rockledge Ranch. It's at the east entrance to the Garden of the Gods on 30th Street.
Recent tests show paint chips on the outside of the building contain lead, and so does the nearby soil. That could cause lead-poisoning in children.

The pre-school is run by the city of Colorado Springs. Next week, 60 children were supposed to begin classes there. Now school officials will look for a temporary site for the school. Since no children have been in the building since last may, officials are confident none have eaten the lead paint chips.
