Climbing Death

A 20-year-old Colorado Springs man has died after a climbing accident in the Garden of the Gods park.

The El Paso County coroner's office has identified the man as Mark Heinmets. An autopsy will be done on Thursday.

Authorities say Heinmets was with two other climbers early Wednesday afternoon in the city park west of Colorado Springs when he fell at least 20 feet from a rock formation. He had the proper climbing
equipment and permits.

Fire Captain Larry Schwarz says Heinmets apparently fell when a rock broke loose. He says the rocks in the Garden of Gods are unstable because of recent stormy weather.

Heinmets sustained head and neck injuries. He was pronounced dead at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.
