Xcel Energy crews have restored power to about 31,000 customers in Denver after an explosion and fire at an electric power substation knocked out power.
Area residents reported seeing a big, black plume of smoke in the area early Monday evening. Denver Fire Lt. Phil Champagne says firefighters quickly controlled the fire.
Rose Medical Center spokeswoman Cara Harshberger says the hospital had prepared to evacuate intensive care patients to other hospitals because backup generators provided only limited power.
Traffic lights were out along Colfax Avenue, a major east-west thoroughfare.
