Study: Potentially Dangerous Chemical Found in Canned Goods

A study out Tuesday reports canned foods and drinks contain the chemical Bisphenol-A. BPA is believed to have links to cancer and other health problems.

The FDA has made warnings about exposure of BPA to fetuses, infants and children. Now, the study says it's in canned goods.

The news of potentially contaminated canned goods is alarming for some parents and grandparents. "What kind of containers are safe to eat from," said Juanita Heieck, whose two-year-old grandson eats a lot of canned food.

The new study, by a coalition of U.S. Public Health and Environmental Groups, was small. Only 50 cans were tested, but out of those 46 of them had BPA.

"We should not set a place for Bisphenol-A at the dinner table," said Liz Hitchcock, a representative for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. BPA is reportedly in cans to protect against metal corrosion or bacterial contamination.

The study recommends you should avoid canned foods to limit your exposure to the potentially dangerous chemical.

Heieck told 11 News this is just another worry to add to her list. "Now I have to think about something else, you know? I have to worry about something else," she said.

The report's ultimate recommendation is to buy fresh or frozen foods whenever possible.

Several companies are already testing out alternatives to BPA.

The chemical industry did issue a response to this new report stating, "Recent reviews of the science have continued to support the safe use of BPA in food contact applications."

California Senator Diane Feinstein is trying to introduce a bill that would ban BPA there. So far, five states have bans against the chemical.
