The body found inside the crawl space of a vacant home in Monument is not a toddler. Autopsy results show that the child is a girl between the ages of seven and ten years old.
Investigators are following up on all leads in this case. But at this point, Monument Police Chief Jacob Shirk is not releasing any specific details about those leads.
Meanwhile, more testing needs to be done on the body to determine how and when the girl died, as well as her identity.
"It was a body and because of the condition of the body, they were not able to determine the race of the body and that's where we're going to leave it at this time," said Police Chief Jacob Shirk.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the Monument Police Department are gathering as much information as they can about why a child's body was found in a home on Century Place.
Investigators are attempting to contact anyone who has ever been associated with the house.
The property owner spoke with 11 News about the case. He says he hasn't been there in about a year, and he's working with investigators to help track down anyone who may have had access to the house.
He told 11 News that a number of different tenants and owners have lived in the house. It's changed hands at least once, and with all the work done on the place, many people have been in and out of the home over the years.
A homicide investigation in Monument is unusual.
"It's very troubling," said Monument Police Chief Jacob Shirk. "Anytime a child is involved in a death or seriously being hurt, it has an impact not only on the community, but also on the officers and law enforcement professionals that handle these cases."
The owner of the property tells 11 News that contract workers uncovered the body on Friday while they were digging to fix a sump pump in the home's crawl space.
As news of the discovery spreads, neighbors say they're shocked.
"We bought our house here in Monument because it's a small community, close-knit schools," said Julie, who lives just a block away from the crime scene. "You don't hear about things like that in Monument."
By Sunday evening, a small memorial for the unknown toddler had been placed on the doorstep of the vacant house.
Dede Laugesen brought plush toys for a child who will never play with them. "I know it's a sentimental act, this child is no longer here," said Dede. "But it's a statement that says this child's life should be honored." She added, "To think about what that child last saw as it walked in through that door, and was it with somebody who loved him?"
While neighbors like Dede wrestle with their own questions, authorities are meticulously investigating one of the most shocking crimes the small town has ever seen.
If this is ruled as a homicide by the El Paso County Coroner's Office, Police Chief Shirk says it will be the first homicide that Monument has ever experienced.
Authorities are asking the community for help. If you have any information about this case, you're asked to call the El Paso County Sheriff's Office at 390-2222, or the Monument Police Department at 481-3253.
On Tuesday, the Monument Police Department and Lewis Palmer School District 38 are hosting a community event at Creekside Middle School from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The school is located at 1330 Creekside Drive in Monument. The event topic is “Keeping Our Children Safe”. There will be guest speakers from Safe2Tell, the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and School District 38.

Chris Paul is a friend of mine and he gets very teary eyed when people mention his grandmother. It was an accident and he misses her very much. Leave Chris alone especially if you do not know the facts. Chris has a great heart. More than anything prayer helps. God Bless all. Thank you Mike for sticking up for Chris.
D, maybe you should check your facts. First, the Chris Paul case occurred outside Monument town limits. Second, he pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, and the case was ruled an accident. That was not a homicide.
So anybody not believe in capital punishment? That's what I thought. The guilty in this case should be publicly hanged, but since that isn't done anymore, I guess lethal injection or something...
