El Paso County investigators say a 41-year-old man who drowned in a pond Sunday night was trying to rescue his three children from water that was deeper than they thought.
Michael Ouellette of Yoder was horseback riding with the children when the young trio came across a pond in a pasture. The children didn't think the pond was very deep and tried to cross it on horseback. Ouellette jumped in the water when the children began having trouble.
The children all made it out safely, but the man's 14-year-old son went back into the pond to locate Ouellette and pull him to shore. The boy performed CPR, but was unable to revive his father.
Authorities say Ouellette had been under water for about 15 minutes.
