Charley's Wake

Hurricane Charley has done his worst to Florida and has moved up the East Coast.

Many people are now left to pick up the pieces of their homes and businesses. Thousands of homes have been destroyed by the storm.
In Punta Gorda, National Guard troops patrolled devastated mobile home parks to prevent looting.

At least 15 people are confirmed dead from the hurricane and thousands have lost their homes.

Charley moved through coastal South and North Carolina Saturday morning before being downgraded to a tropical storm.

President Bush has declared the state of Florida a "disaster area" and the Red Cross has moved in to provide some disaster relief. More than 250 shelters are set up in Florida and 40 more in North and South Carolina.

More than 16 thousand Floridians spent the night in those shelters and the Red Cross provided them with food, clothing, and a place to rest.

But the Red Cross does need your help. If you'd like to make any contribution to the organization, you can call them at 1-800-HELP-NOW.
