Tight budgets and smaller crews are making it hard for city workers to keep plugging up the multitude of potholes scattered along streets in Colorado Springs.

"They're horrible," said Mike Bartlett. He told 11 News he has damaged his car twice because of potholes. "It's just getting frustrating. Just about everywhere I go, there's a pothole."

Bartlett said the first incident happened on Dublin Blvd. and Academy Blvd.,"the entire bottom of my car hit the ground," he said. An insurance claim helped Bartlett pay for his damage the first time.

The second incident happened on Rand Avenue near Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard and Lake Avenue.

Bill Moritz, a project supervisor with the city's street division says the potholes are the worse he’s seen in years. "We're trying the best we can with what we have," Moritz said.

The city’s street division has 10 crews spending 10 hours, four days a week filling the holes with asphalt. Since the start of the year about 7,400 potholes have been covered. The city has just over 200 open requests for potholes that need to be filled.

"With any pothole, it's a temporary fix,” said Moritz. “The ultimate goal is to be able to resurface the roads." But with a busted budget, the city said, that won't happen anytime soon.

"I've lived here 12 years and it's the worse I've ever seen it," said Bartlett. He hopes his car doesn't fall victim to the potholes a third time.

To report a pothole in Colorado Springs, you can call and leave a message on the city's 24-hour hotline. The pothole hotline is 385-6808.

News flash about taxes. Governor Ritter raised our car registration fees this past year for road maintenance. Last time I checked, I'm still paying a pretty penny on each gallon of gas I purchase. I can't believe people are still complaining of our defeat of the property tax hike. I said it before and I'll say it again. When homeowners and business owners are the target of any tax, I'll always vote no. Renters use the services just like the rest of us. The only way to be fair would be adjusting the sales tax, for it affects everyone in the city that purchases goods and services.

CO Local: I agree. Have the city supply the materials, and get those homeless and welfare recipients to work now. Have an "official" from the city to supervise them and city trucks to block traffic while they fill the holes. These "workers" can sign a release if they get hurt they won't sue. This is workable, and I would like a comment from the city on it. Everyone wins.

I think we should put those homeless we are paying to keep in a hotel to work on fixing these. And how about the welfare recipients? If there is anyone we are giving free money to, put them to work.
