FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) _ Five soldiers were hurt when a military helicopter crashed at this U.S. Army base, the second copter crash in six days.
Thursday's accident sent four soldiers from Fort Carson, Colo., and one soldier from Fort Irwin's National Training Center to the base hospital, Army Capt. Chris Belcher said Friday in a news release. The UH-60L crashed at 3:05 a.m. Thursday just north of the fort's center.
Three of the men were treated and released. Two were hospitalized in satisfactory condition, said Army Maj. Mike Lawhorn, a base spokesman.
An OH-58D helicopter crashed Aug. 26, also during training. Two other Fort Carson soldiers were slightly injured in that crash, officials said.
The crashes apparently were unrelated. They are under investigation by the Army Safety Center, Lawhorn said.
However, two crashes in a one two-week training rotation does not necessarily signify a problem, Lawhorn said. ``It's not like a normal week,'' he said. ``It's one of the most intense weeks in their 18-month rotation.''
