Why would a mother kill her 9-year-old son and then turn the gun on herself?
Authorities are trying to find an answer to that question as they investigate an alleged homicide/attempted suicide near Steamboat Springs.
In the middle of the night Wednesday, sister station KCNC says Routt County deputies got called to a home 10 miles south of Steamboat Springs on reports of a suicide or attempted suicide.
When they arrived, a man told deputies that his wife had shot their son, and was still upstairs with a gun. Deputies found 9-year-old Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan dead and his mother unconscious. She had a single gunshot wound.
The Routt County Sheriff's Office confirmed to KCNC that they are investigating the incident as a homicide. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office are assisting.
There's no word on whether the boy's mother, Lisa Marie Lesyshen, has been arrested or what charges she is facing.
