DENVER (AP) -- Two leaders in state water use organizations are dead following a freak accident at a cabin near Creede.
Officials say 56-year-old Ray Wright and 53-year-old Doug Shriver were smothered Friday when heavy snow from the cabin roof buried them.
Wright was board president for the Rio Grande Water Conservation District and Shriver was chairman of the Rio Grande Water Users Association.
Mineral County coroner Charles Downing says the snow slid off the roof all at once and caught the two Monte Vista men.
He says snowfall has been especially heavy and estimated that the cabin roof held 2 1/2 feet of snow.
Lewis H. Entz served with Wright and knew both men well. He says they were "water buffaloes" an affectionate nickname for those who work to protect the state's water.
