At around 1:00AM this morning Colorado Springs Police received a call regarding a gun shot wound and assault in Village Green Park. When officers arrived they found 41 year old Mike Lopour lying in the park near the restrooms suffering from an apparent gunshot wound near his right shoulder. Paramedics from the Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR responded to the scene and stabilized Mr. Lopour before transporting him to Penrose Hospital where he is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Mr. Lopour reported to officers on scene, that he was walking through the park when he was confronted by four to six males. He also reported that he had been involved in a verbal altercation; days prior to this incident possibly with these same males. During this incident; Mr. Lopour says that as he was being attacked by the suspects, so he pulled out an illegally concealed hand gun to defend himself from the attack.

During the confrontation; one of the suspects grabbed Mr. Lopour’s weapon. Mr. Lopour said as he struggled to keep the semi-automatic weapon from being taken away, the gun “went off” and he was hit by a bullet. The suspects fled the area and were not apprehended during a search of the area by officers. Mr. Lopour said that all of the suspects were unknown to him and he did not get a good look at any of them. No witnesses were located and the only information reference the alleged suspects was that several of them spoke Spanish.

Mr. Lopour was intoxicated at the time of the event which made it unlawful for him to be in possession of a firearm. Additionally, having a weapon within a City Park is also unlawful. Mr. Lopour was served and released with a summons and complaint for the weapons offenses. Not that it would have affected the citation being served to him, Mr. Lopour did not possess a concealed weapons permit.

Man, I love to read comments by all of the good, upstanding, God-fearing, law abiding, citizens of C/S who have NEVER made a mistake or done a dumb thing in their lives!!! And even better, not all the facts have actually come out yet. Here's a question. Can you say you know for sure exactly what happened? It takes a BIG man to kick a dude when he is down. I feel sorry for you when the shoe is on the other foot. I'm not saying you have to show support for the guy, just don't be so d@#n judgemental. It does no good to complain about being labeled, or grouped, unjustly accused, when you turn around and do the same thing. "Let he whom is without sin...."
