Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry is back in Colorado, hoping his war record in Vietnam will appeal to the estimated 400,000 veterans and 100,000 active duty soldiers here.
Kerry is expected to meet with a group of veterans later Thursday. On Friday, he'll start a cross-country bus tour to the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
The tour begins in Aurora, where Kerry was born at Fitzsimons Army Hospital on December 11, 1943. Bill Holen, the coordinator of Colorado Veterans for Kerry, says many veterans are supporting Kerry because of the war in Iraq, Bush's lack of military experience and his record on veterans' issues.
A Bush campaign spokesman says other veterans groups are supporting the president, because Bush has increased medical care
for veterans by 40 percent, increased pay for soldiers and fought
to get them equipment.
