The City of Colorado Springs has begun a streetlight adoption program to help interested citizens reactivate streetlights that have been turned off over the past six weeks as part of a $1.2 million cost-saving measure for the general fund.

Adoption fees will cover the cost of keeping a residential or arterial (larger, multi lane road) streetlight on and maintained for the remainder of 2010. Annual costs for an entire year of service are $100 for a residential light and $240 for an arterial light. Adoption fees will be prorated throughout the year, depending on when a light is adopted.

To adopt a streetlight, interested citizens can visit www.springsgov.com and click on the “Adopt-a-Streetlight” link to find complete program details.

Citizens who would prefer to send a check can leave a message at 385-5903 (select option 1), to have forms mailed, faxed or emailed to them.

Once the payment is received in full crews will work to reactivate lights within ten working days.

The City began the streetlight deactivation program on Feb. 1 to help address diminished sales tax revenues and general fund budget gaps.

It is interesting that the city can not aford to keep lights on. Considering the City Pulled 2 permits last week for a a remodel and an additional building for Colorado Springs Utilities totaling: $796,030? Whats wrong with the spaces they have now?

The whiners up here obviously never saw the stars at night, are afraid of the dark, believe in the boogeyman, know the bears will get them and were never taught to turn out the lights when you're not using them! No doubt my neighbors have more money than brains or common sense! BOOO!! Scary Stuff... The light is back on... Lord, help us all!!
