State education officials are in Washington making their pitch for why Colorado should win millions in federal education funding.

The team representing Colorado was making its presentation Tuesday.

Colorado was among 16 states -- and the only from the West -- to be chosen as a finalist in the "Race to the Top" competition earlier this month.

Winners will be announced in April and losers can reapply for a second round later this year, but there's no guarantee finalists will win any money.

Colorado is hoping to win $377 million to pay for things such as expanded merit pay for teachers, more training, and new systems to track the performance of teachers and principals. Their ratings would be linked to how their students are progressing.

Common sense questions: 1. "Win"??? 2. Can anyone tell me what the federal government has to do with schools (any rights granted in constitution?) 3. I can think of two ways the government gets money: a) taxes from the people b) printing it If I'm not mistaken we send them money to be squandered and then we ask for some back? My comments never seem to be the ones drawing ridicule (perhaps because I'm right too often). So please, I'm asking for ridicule and constructive thoughts to prove me wrong.

I find myself wondering if my child would receive a better education at home than she would in public schools. At least then, I would know exactly what my money was going toward.

How about just giving Colorado schools some of the money back that was cut in school budget reductions by the state? Forget all the new programs, just let us keep from firing the 50 teachers we currently plan to in Lewis Palmer School D38.
