City Street Inspectors have been finding an increasing number of storm drain inlets filled with bagged dog waste.

It seems to be more prevalent in the Rockrimmon and Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhoods.

Pet owners are making the effort to pick it up. But, city officials say they're not disposing of it the right way. It is creating quite a health risk.

"People could be drinking it down stream, recreating in it. It also is used for irrigating crops we eat, so you're essentially eating dog waste," said Jeff Besse, Stormwater Specialist.

That's why city officials are reminding pet owners to pick up after their pet and throw the waste out in their own trash can.

If someone is caught throwing pet waste in a storm drain, it is considered littering. Violators could face a $500 fine or 90 days in jail.
