DENVER (AP) -- Colorado gubernatorial candidates say they're open to exploring the idea of hosting the Winter Olympics, but the economic payoff has to justify what are likely to be multibillion-dollar costs.

Gov. Bill Ritter said on a radio show this month that he hoped Colorado could host the Olympics in 2022. Gubernatorial candidates John Hickenlooper, Scott McInnis and Dan Maes say they're open to exploring the idea.

The nonprofit Denver Metro Sports Commission is working on early estimates for venues and infrastructure that would be needed to host the Olympics, but it hasn't disclosed those figures.

In 1972, Colorado voters spurned a winning bid to host the Winter Olympics, largely over concerns about environmental issues and costs.

Where's the money coming from for this? We're broke remember...I do and you do but does the people supporting this plan know that? How is Salt lake doing are they still paying the bill. What kind of REAL benefits will we get out of this...another arena for Denver? Who else in the state will really benefit long term with this deal? I don't think it will be the rest of Colorado (except for that one ski area chosen). How much taxpayer money will be used to explore this issue then put on the big show for the Olympic Committee to even decide if we are "qaulified" to host such an event. How many cities who have hosted can say it did not cost them in the end to host and has really benefited the community after it was over? (and I don't me the elected officials who say what you want to hear, I mean can the show it in the accounting).
