A settlement that could pay up to $657.5 million to workers sickened by dust from the destroyed World Trade Center is going before a judge.
Lawyers for the city, construction companies and the workers are to appear before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein on Friday. He must approve the settlement, and so must the more than 10,000 ground zero rescue and recovery workers themselves.
The settlement was announced Thursday by the WTC Captive Insurance Co. It was established to indemnify the city and contractors against potential legal action as they cleaned up the site after Sept. 11.
The settlement would make the city and companies represented by the insurer liable for at least $575 million, with more money available to the sick if certain conditions are met.

Gosh, if they could have put this off another nine years they would have had to pay out even less! Now, that would be a great health care plan!
