The Colorado Department of Transportation has reopened one lane in both directions on Interstate 70 after a massive rock slide rained boulders onto the roadway and punched gaping holes.
CDOT crews have opened I-70 through Glenwood Canyon in both east and west directions. Only one lane in each direction will be open and will remain this way until long-term repairs can be completed in the coming weeks and months.
CDOT warns that the speed limit has been reduced to 40 MPH and loads over 14-feet wide are restricted from traveling through the work area.
A 17-mile stretch of I-70 has been completely closed in both directions to all traffic at Glenwood (mm 116) and at Dotsero (mm 133) since Monday morning. It is estimated that the rock slide brought 20 boulders onto the interstate, ranging in size from 3 feet to 10 feet in diameter. The largest is estimated to weigh about 66 tons. The rocks made holes as big as 20 feet x 10 feet in the elevated sections of roadway.
