Firefighter have knocked down all visible flames and are mopping up hot spots after a fire evacuated a Colorado Springs apartment building Thursday afternoon.

Witnesses tell 11 News the fire was contained to one three-story apartment building and flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the Berkshire Apartments on the 5700 block of Innsbrook near Academy and Vickers in Colorado Springs.

It is a 24-unit building and 12 units could be damaged. According to firefighters, those 12 units were evacuated. The apartment building management tells 11 News everyone whose apartment is unlivable will be moved to a vacant apartment in the complex so they will have a place to stay.

"I mean, this one was bad. Really we were chasing the wind, but it could definitely be worse than what it is," says firefighter Mike Smaldino, CSFD.

Officials on scene say no one was injured. One dog was rescued from the burning part of the building and was returned to its owners.

Some media sources are reporting a woman was rescued from the building, but fire officials say that woman was in the part of the building that was not on fire and she actually walked out on her own.

The cause has not yet been determined.

I hope that everyone is paying attention! Before long, exceptional work like what happened here today will be severly cut! This was an excellent job well done. Just wait till the cuts happen. Fires won't be stopped as smoothly, hopefully a wildfire doesn't break out after the cuts too. Talk about manpower intensive! Job well done CSFD.

We want this city to be a safe place to live so somehow we need to save the jobs about to be lost! If they have to start operating with three men crews and closing stations we will no longer live in a safe city nor will the firefighters be safe when on duty!
