Budget cuts forced the city of Colorado Springs to cancel Fourth of July fireworks in Memorial Park in 2009. Two dedicated people now hope word of mouth and some social networking will generate the support they need to bring back the 30-year tradition.

There is no certainty the fireworks will fly over Memorial Park in Colorado Springs this summer.

"The clock's ticking fast, and we're going to need lots of help," said Levi Jones. Jones and his friend Megan Martinez may be the ones to make it happen.

"It means so much for the community, and it's meant so much for so long," Megan said.

The duo met with a team on Wednesday which has put together the show before. Colorado Springs' Mayor Lionel Rivera along with the heads of Parks and Recreation and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic discussed the nuts and bolts.

"I wanted to demonstrate that we're passionate about it too," Rivera said. "We want to see it happen if it's possible."

The cost to cover the event comes in at more than $100,000. It's been raised in the past, and Rivera offered to connect Levi and Megan with some potential donors.

"I could draft a letter with my signature, as long as they're willing to follow up," Rivera said.

"It would be well worth the effort," said Megan.

She and Levi are starting by getting attention through Facebook. The page, Fireworks in Memorial Park had 152 members late Wednesday night. Their goal is to have as much of what they need for a Fourth of July event organized by mid-April. Mayor Rivera also suggested anyone who wishes to make a contribution can call the offices of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.

The $100,000 is to pay for the philharmonic to play and the cost of the actual fireworks show. I think the organizers have decided to do away with the philharmonic and try to focus on just the fireworks which is alot cheaper! The idea is to bring back the fireworks to Memorial Park.
