A woman was killed by a rockslide on Highway 40 in Routt County near Steamboat Springs Wednesday morning. Colorado Dept. of Transportation said the woman was traveling eastbound when one rock crashed into her car.

The basketball-sized rock fell from a ledge about 300 yards above the roadway in the Mt. Harris Canyon west of Steamboat Springs near mile marker 114.

"The victim was a passenger in a car traveling eastbound, on the other side of the highway from the hillside," said CDOT spokeswoman Nancy Shanks.

CDOT said it is a very rare location for a rockslide. CDOT geologists are on their way to the scene to investigate the slide and the stability of the hillside.

Highway 40 is on the detour route for the I-70 rockslide that has closed a portion of the interstate through Glenwood Canyon.
