The federal government has changed the way schools must report the race and ethnicity of students and staff.

In the past, students could be identified in only one category. Now, law requires school districts to ask and maintain records on as many categories as possible.

"We knew that there was going to be some confusion when we looked at the form," said Colorado Springs School District 11 spokesperson Elaine Naleski.

D-11 sent the forms home with students. It asks parents to provide the race and ethnic background of their children.

The information will be used to report test results, including C-SAP, graduation rates and other information about groups of students.

D-20 plans to notify parents about the change and have them go on line to select the correct categories for their children.
