A man who Senator John Kerry said didn't have enough experience to run for President, is now his running mate for the 2004 Presidential election. It's North Carolina Senator John Edwards, who is considered a “moderate” Democrat. Local Democrats are excited about the choice, while local Republicans say they're not worried.
"John reaches across party lines and speaks to the heart of America." Stephen Smith reads the e-mail he got from the Kerry campaign Tuesday morning---just minutes before the public announcement that Edwards will be on the Kerry ticket. Smith received the early notice because he's the Vice Chairman of “Colorado Springs for Kerry.” "What I like about Edwards is his exuberance and he's for the middle class American,” says Smith. He also says the excitement is building and this announcement renews his commitment to get out the vote and spread the word.
Meantime, the chairman of the El Paso County Republicans says he's not worried about the Kerry/Edwards ticket. "I think we'll be very well represented, as Iraq becomes increasingly stable and as the economy continues to improve," says Leland Gilbert.
Many Republicans question Edwards' political experience. He's only been a U.S. Senator since 1999. Before that, he was a successful trial lawyer.
