The total number of District 49 schools found to contain mold is now at seven. Last week during routine maintenance, two schools were found to contain mold forcing the district to evaluate the rest of the schools..

All seven elementary schools are closed for the time being as crews begin to remove the mold, which they hope to have it all done in time for school to start.

With only two weeks remaining before the first day of school in District 49, school officials are scrambling.

"What we've discovered is mold behind the vinyl wall covering there is mold and moisture,” said Henry Reitweisner, the district’s Director of Planning and Construction

Originally discovered during routine maintenance in only two schools, it has now been found in seven, meaning a lot of changes have to be made. Those changes will have to be made quickly. Work has already begun to remove the vinyl walls and replace them with paint.

"Our current plan right now is to have all schools opened up by school start provide a safe environment for all occupants and make sure it never happens again,” said Reitweisner.

Saria Dumas just moved to Colorado Springs from California and is enrolling her daughter in school. She told 11 News mold in schools is a common problem there, and she's not worried.

"We had a lot of mold, so we know its really easy to take care of and i'm sure the school will take care of that,” said Dumas.

However, what may be common in California is not common here and officials are taking it seriously.

"We have a heightened concern because we have not dealt with it before on this level of seven schools,” Reitweisner said.

As for what type of mold was found in the schools, that is still being tested in a lab. The results should take between seven and ten days.
