Dirty Story

What a mess! More than 62,000 gallons of wastewater sludge washed into Sand Creek.

The overflow started when a valve was accidentally left open on a sludge line near Las Vegas and Wabash Streets.

Colorado Springs Utilities says the wastewater had been partially treated before it spilled into a drainage ditch and into the creek.

Officials suspect the valve was open for eight hours. Cleanup is still underway since the leak was discovered around 8:30 Saturday morning.

People living near Sand or Fountain Creeks between Colorado Springs and Pueblo or near the Arkansas River east of Pueblo are asked to stay away from the creeks.
