We are used to the ever-changing weather in southern Colorado. However, a series of freeze-thaw cycles in recent weeks is tearing up pavement around Colorado Springs.

The City Street Division is making pothole patching an even higher priority beginning March 3, through Thursday, March 11. Nine full-time crews will be solely dedicated to repairing potholes.

Workers will begin with 188 open requests for pothole repair and continue in these same areas, filling potholes as they go.

Here are a few ways to report potholes in Colorado Springs:

• Pothole Hotline (leave a message): 385-6808

• E-mail: streetdivision@springsgov.com

When reporting a pothole, callers should provide detailed information such as street name, direction of traffic flow (north bound, south bound, etc.), nearby cross streets, landmarks such as nearby buildings, side of the street, location in the street and distance from the curb.

The city says since January 1, 2010, crews have received reports for 601 pothole locations and have filled 2,387 potholes.

Nine full time crews? That's funny. I hit a giant pothole on westbound Constitution just after Chelton, incurred about $900 worth of damage to my car and was told that the city wasn't going to help me with repairs. I was told by the city that they only had two trucks to fill potholes on the more than 2000 miles of road that we have in this city and that the city was just too flat broke to run any more trucks than this. So the city found extra trucks in just a week after I called them. That's incredible!

Deservedly or not, I've taken to renaming potholes to "Dougies" in honour of Doug Bruce.

Maybe the city should put pothole repair contracts up for bid in the private sector. My guess is we could save money and get the job done faster.
