District 11 School Board officials are still working on cuts for the next school year. Their goal is to trim about $11-16 Million.

Wednesday night, board members voted not to pass the preliminary budget. They said they wanted to go line by line to adjust the cuts that have already been proposed.

Millions of dollars from southern Colorado schools are being chopped. District 11 officials say custodians and other staff may lose their jobs.

Board members are trying to figure out the best way to find a balanced budget for the next school year, while trying not to diminish the type of education given to D-11 students.

"We are at a lower level by putting some of these things back, we're down from 7 million dollars in reductions to 6.6 [million], keeping in mind we still got to get to 16 million dollars,” said District 11 Chief Financial Officer Glenn Gustafson. “So we still have a lot of work ahead of us."

The $16 million cuts are only an estimate. D-11 and all the other school districts in southern Colorado will find out in April how much money they're getting from the state.

John, with grammar and sentence structure like that, I wouldn't be pointing out others educational shortfalls. 8:15 - the problem is they refuse to look at alternative fundraising. Did you see the Boy Scouts this year? $30 for a single tin? The cheapest item was $20 for a donation to the troops. For anything tangible, it was $28! The profits for the troops was pittance. They need to think locally instead of these big corporation fundraisers. I'd be willing, given my own business, that there are dozens of local businesses that would be able to give anywhere from 80-100% profit, just for the exposure!

I cant believe we are actually talking about cutting from our children's education. Our kids are WAY behind as it is. Most of the parents in this town cant even a GED test. Just looking at some of the blogs on this web site prove that.

Jana, I live right in between 2 district 11 school one being Bristol the other the Old Bijou School every single night there are lights on in both of these building all night..Bijou School is no longer there so they are paying for electric in an empty building..Bristol they lights are on all the time even in Summer..The Janitors there are Lazy I see then all the time standing across the street smoking when they should be working and I mean all the time..there is alot that can be done to cut back on money ..Mary P. I agree those fundraisers are a joke who these days has that kind of money to buy a frozen pizza or pastry when they could be selling the 1.00 candy bars that did infact work to rise money with very low over head.this year instead of the 1.00 candy bars they are pushing Chocolate Rabbits and candy almonds come do a real fund raiser..let the top end take a 10% cut..move to a 4 day week and savings will be had
