El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa has changed his mind when it comes to serving a possible third term. Monday, during a rally at the Sheriff's office, he announced his intent to once again make a bid for the position.

A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office says Maketa made the decision after receiving numerous e-mails and letters, followed by a showing of support at the actual office on Monday afternoon. About 80 to 100 people braved the snowfall to show their support.

Maketa is now serving his second term in the position, and just last month announced that he wouldn't seek a third term, and would enter the private sector. The show of support appears to have changed his mind.

Two others also intend to compete for the office of Sheriff in November. Former El Paso County Sheriff's Lieutenant Todd Evans and Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk have also decided to run.

Sheriff Maketa is a very talented, intelligent and ethical person who cares a great deal about his community and family. He puts his heart and soul into the job. It is unfortunate that there are those unhappy, self loathing people who do not take risk or responsibility for anything they do, but who want to share their misery by taking time thinking up things to say against others who they have a need to try to bring down to their own low morals.

Barb, where are you getting your information from? If you are so "sick" of it, post your whole name and state proof, not some made up story. Its people like you who make the job hard. The man has always put others first. If you ask me you cant put a time frame on someone who is doing a great job. The county has not even seen its lowest point yet with all the cuts. I have asked the deputies and they are the happiest people I know. If they were not, they would go to another agency that pays more. They are there because of him. CSPD makes thousands of $ more a year but they do not have the great working conditions that the Sheriff has made in the county. I hope someone runs around town telling stories about you Barb, how many rumors are out there about you? Should you be investigated?

It amazes me how rumors and suspicions circulate. We seem to be a world in love with gossip and controversy. Very sad. What is true - Sheriff Maketa has done an incredible job the last 7 years as Sheriff, as well as the time he spent prior to that as a deputy in the same organization. He fights for the needs of the community and his personnel, pushing forward against all obstacles. He has led with passion and conviction. I applaud him for putting service in front of self for another 4 years. And a big thank you to his family for standing by this difficult decision.
