A tent drive in Southern Colorado helping earthquake victims in Haiti is wrapping up, but there's still time to help.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department, along with American Medical Response have been collecting tents.

"We're happy to help," says Lt. J.J. Halsey with the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

According to Halsey, about 300 tents have been collected so far, and he's hoping more donations will roll in.

The tent drive wraps up on Monday, February 8th, 2010. Any new or gently used "4 man" or larger tents and/or large tarps can be dropped off at the AMR operation at 2370 N. Powers Blvd, or any of the 20 CSFD fire stations.

Or you can simply pick up the phone.

"Call any of the Big 5 stores in Colorado Springs or Pueblo and they will just essentially take an order over the phone and they'll give the last sales price, or the best sales price plus an additional ten percent off," says Tracey Shifflet, a paramedic in El Paso County.

Once the donations are collected, they will be sent directly to Caring House Project, an organization in Haiti that has been building self-sustaining villages in Haiti for over ten years.

"It's so nice to know that the citizens of Colorado Springs, that we can go down and we can actually make a difference for somebody, we can provide them a home," says Shifflet.

Many people might agree with you but the bottom line is we are helping fellow human beings not a country... we not helping the country we are helping people to give them shelter. As you post these comments on your computer from your home with heat and electricity be aware of where it came from. the infastructure as to which it was made available to you... your country did not provide it to you... A human being provided it to you. the very keboard you type your post from probaly was made by a human being , not a country! A country is just land...If every thing was taken from you by mother nature you would need a human being to help you out...not a country. So as an american you have your right to your opinion , but as a human being I have my duty to help.

I commend the Fire Dept's efforts & the efforts of the folks that donated to this cause but........with the homeless people right here in our town that need help, I wonder why a drive such as this one isn't implemented for the homeless here first. With KKTV running the story about the city wanting to make it illegal to camp here, then running this donation drive story, it makes me think the priorities of who we need to offer help to is screwed up big time. Call me selfish, a jerk, uncaring, whatever you want to call me. I'm not bothered by what I'm called. I'm bothered by how we'll rush to the aid of foreign countries first before we rush to aid those here in the USA. this country is currently in the toilet. That toilet hasn't been flushed yet but the handle is ready to drop. I will help & have helped people here when I was & am able to. I will not help a foreign country before I help here in the USA. I'm not rich, I can't help both so the USA is my first priority.
