The University of Colorado's president is under fire for saying that the "c" word can sometimes be considered a term of endearment.

Elizabeth Hoffman's comments came during a sworn deposition in connection with a lawsuit against the University. During during the deposition, a lawyer representing former female football player Katie Hnida asked Hoffman about a male player calling Hnida the "c" word.

He said:
"Can you indicate a polite context in which the word would be used?"

Hoffman replied:
"Yes, i've actually heard it used as a term of endearment.

Some say Hoffman's statement is even more unnerving and inexcusable than head football coach Gary Barnett's calling Hnida a "terrible player."

In a statement released by the University officials say Hoffman is a medieval scholar who is aware that the word dates back to Chaucer, at a time when it was not considered a negative term. It went on to say that she is aware of the word's negative connotations.
