As our summertime temperatures rise so do the number of dog bites. Colorado Springs Utilities meter readers seem to be a favorite target for aggressive dogs. In the past few years dozens of meter readers have been treated for dog bites.

So far in 2007 the numbers are down a bit, but CSU is aiming to keep it that way, which is why they are asking for help from the public.

Meter readers say even friendly dogs that they encounter on a regular basis have the tendency to attack. With kids out of school many are spending time in the backyard. Dogs tend to be very protective of children and can become aggressive towards unfamiliar people. CSU asks that people make sure the latches on their gates and 'doggie doors' are working properly.

The best defense against having your dog attack is to check your bill. Each month when your utility bill comes in the mail, there is a date printed on the bill that tells you when the readers will be in your neighborhood.
