As Nancy Reagan stood watching, the flag-draped casket of the 40th president was taken up the steps on the west side of the U.S. Capitol.

A formal funeral procession that included a horse-drawn caisson and a riderless horse brought Ronald Reagan's body to the Capitol.

With a military band playing ``Hail to the Chief,'' there was a 21-gun salute.

Shortly before the procession arrived, there was a deafening flyby of 21 military aircraft in a missing man formation.

Thousands stood along the route of the procession, some applauding and others cheering the former first lady.

She acknowledged the outpouring by waving.

Vice President Cheney is to speak at a Capitol ceremony in the Rotunda that will be attended by family and dignitaries.

Later in the evening, the public will be allowed to pay their respects.

The chief of the Capitol Police says he expects as many 200-thousand people to view the body.
