Oprah is taking on a new mission... to end distracted driving.

Monday's "Oprah Winfrey Show” presented a special hour dedicated to stories of those who have lost loved ones due to accidents caused by distracted drivers. The episode was called "This Show Could Save Your Life: America's New Deadly Obsession."

As part of the local campaign, Oprah is launching an online pledge campaign on Oprah.com to get drivers to commit to ending the practice of texting or talking on their phones while driving.

The “No Phone Zone” pledge will be available on Oprah.com following Monday’s show at www.oprah.com/nophonezone, or click on the link below.

Oprah's online pledge reads as follows:

"I pledge to make my car a No Phone Zone. Beginning right now, I will do my part to help put an end to distracted driving by not texting or using my phone while I am driving. I will ask other drivers I know to do the same. I pledge to make a difference."

In Colorado, it's illegal to text and drive. "It's a primary offense," says Colorado Springs Police Sgt. Phillip LeBeau.

While cops in the Springs haven't given any tickets since the law passed a month ago, they say they're keeping their eye out on drivers.

I do not text while driving - nor do I talk on my cell phone. How do people (and Oprah) feel about all the technology available in new cars? I think THAT is even worse than texting. How can the auto makers do all that and claim that their cars are "safe"?

Until we get corporations to agree that their employees are not to answer, talk or conference on their telephones while traveling--cell phone usage while driving will never stop
