Colorado Democratic Senator Ken Salazar says he's sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates asking the Army to help create an economic development plan for southeastern Colorado communities, which would be affected by a potential expansion of Fort Carson's Pinon Canyon training ground.

Salazar offered few specifics during a conference call with reporters, other than to suggest the Army station a brigade as part of a "Fort Carson annex" in the expansion area, perhaps near Trinidad.

He said he wanted a response from Gates within 30 days.

The Army wants to expand the maneuver site from 368 square miles to more than 1,000 square miles as Fort Carson grows.

Salazar says he hopes the Pentagon will provide more details about what officials want to do in southeastern Colorado.

Putting a brigade there would mean taking even more land with Eminent Domain. There are no "willing sellers" That's a lie. Salazar will never be reelected if he stabs the ranching community in the back like this. This is some heavy duty political ploy. Is he going to remove the amendment from the bill to wait on the Army response? They can't hold up an appropriations bill like that forever. Where is Allard on this? What're his talking points? It's gone through the House, but what do Musgrave, DeGette, Lamborn, Udall, and the rest have to say? This is ginormous. "No comment" will no longer do. He's talking about the entire net gain from Fort Hood. You can't just take the same money appropriated for the same BRAC number at Fort Carson and apply that to the PCMS with no services, infrastructure, or facilities. It would take a ton more money that the 105 million in the pipe for Carson.

Salazar's latest "idea" for creating a "win-win" outcome for SE Colorado is preposterous. The idea of replacing a long-term, stable, productive population (which produces invaluable grassfed beef for the nation), which DOES NOT WANT TO BE REMOVED from their generational property, with a transient population of soldiery... is another insult to the citizens of SE Colorado. What part of NO don't they understand? The people down here are fed up with political backdoor moves to block the Salazar- Musgrave amendment from inclusion in the 2008 appropriations bill. We need Senator Salazar to stop muddying the waters, and STAND WITH the people of SE Colorado in opposition to any expansion.
