The 17-year-old driver of a car from which another boy fell early Sunday could face felony charges in connection with an alleged "car surfing" accident.

An unidentified 17-year-old boy was critically injured after striking his head on the pavement of The Citadel mall parking lot in Colorado Springs.

Police said the two were taking turns standing on the hood of the car while the other drove in circles when the one fell.

He was in critical condition at last check in a Colorado Springs hospital.

Witnesses said several teens had gathered to watch the illegal stunt. 19-year-old Kelsie Simmons was among them, and says the victim had been standing on the roof of the car while another 17-year-old boy drove.

"It was really, really scary to see," said Simmons. "The driver made a sudden u-turn and the guy on the car screamed really loud and fell. I think he broke a couple bones... he's not doing too good."

Police say car surfing became popular in the 1980's. It was featured in movies like "Teen Wolf," and most recently in the movie "Grindhouse." Simmons says she's tried the so-called thrill ride herself.

"It's almost killed me a couple times," said Simmons.

Car surfing has already killed dozens of teenagers across the country including at least 4 from Colorado, over the last 3 years. Despite the statistics, Simmons says the surf is still up among her peers.

"It's just something teens decide to get up and do... it's not very safe at all."

What do teens expect? If you do something stupid and dangerous someone will get injured. Some thing has to change and teens and kids these days have NO HOME TRAINING !! DAH!! My thoughts are with the injured teen and his family. I hope everything works out.

This is a deja vue for me. In 1979 when I was in high school, one of my best friends was riding on the hood of a car that another one of her friends was driving in the Citadel parking lot. She fell off and hit her head. She died a few days later. How many times does someone have to die before these kids stop doing this!
