The county's department of human services reports that the
number of households receiving food stamps increased 14 percent to
an average 10-thousand-349 per month during the second quarter that
ended in June.
During the same period the number of households receiving
Medicaid, the state's health care program for the poor, increased
by 13 percent to 14-thousand-seven-hundred.
Human Services director David Berns says the case loads have
increased in the last nine months as a result of slowing economy.
About 64-hundred people have been laid off in Colorado Springs
since January 2001.
