West Nile Virus

Wade Shoemaker of Countryside Large Animal Veterinary Service
says the horses were previously healthy, they had not been
vaccinated and all lived within two miles of the South Platte
River.
One of the sickened animals was boarded with 17 vaccinated
horses, which remained healthy while the unprotected equine got
sick and was euthanized. Shoemaker says that shows the vaccine
seems to be working.
Shoemaker also says he expected West Nile to prey on older
feeble horses, but these five were previously healthy and of middle
age.
Seven Colorado horses have been sickened by West Nile since it
was discovered in the state last week.
