Last year, 51 vehicle deaths were caused by distracted drivers in Colorado alone. Of those accidents, 11 were attributed to cell phones.

Students from Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs teamed up with Allstate Insurance to "X" the text; a way to raise awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. They gathered in the school cafeteria for lunch, all for the cause.

It's students that will be the most greatly effected by the new cell phone ban that went into effect in Colorado Tuesday. Any driver under the age of 18 is banned from any cell phone use while behind the wheel.

Mari McGilton, a senior at Pine Creek is an advocate of the ban. She learned a tough lesson when she crashed her car after text messaging behind the wheel.

"It's that one time that takes your life away or somebody Else's life away," said McGilton, who fortunately walked away from the accident she was involved in.

Allstate Insurance has teamed up with other schools from 41 states in an effort to "X" the text. This, as staggering statistics continue to be released. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, nearly 6,000 people died in crashes due to a distracted driver in the United States in 2008. Research shows that the worst offenders are the youngest and least experienced drivers: men and women under 20 years of age.
