Three people are dead after a portion of a bridge over Interstate 70 collapses.
The Colorado State Patrol says, around 10 a.m., a 40 ton steel girder from C-470 fell onto I-70 eastbound near Golden.
The girder crushed an SUV carrying a man, a woman, and a young girl inside. All three were killed.
A CDOT spokeswoman says the girder was put up Tuesday as part of construction to widen a bridge over I-70.
Governor Bill Owens visited the site of the accident and is vowing to get to the bottom of it.
"This is a horrible aberration and it's one we want to find what happened so we can avoid it in the future."
Interstate 70 is now closed in both directions at C-470 until at least late Sunday.
