(Steamboat Springs-AP) -- Two fires burning north of Steamboat
Springs are close to merging Saturday night.
The Mount Zirkel Complex is estimated at more than 17 thousand
acres. It includes the eight thousand-acre Burn Ridge fire and the
nine thousand-acre Hinman fire, which was contained last month but
flared up again.
Both are burning in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area. No structures are threatened but portions of the Routt National Forest are closed.
Southwest of Steamboat, a 75 hundred-acre fire tripled in size yesterday and destroyed a guest lodge, a barn and some outbuildings.
The blaze is called the Big Fish fire and was sparked by lightning July eighth. It was being allowed to burn because it was in the remote Flat Tops Wilderness Area.
In southwestern Colorado, a fire forced the closure of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Officials are investigating the cause.
