First Death, One Year Later

Private First Class Jesse Givens was killed a year ago Saturday when the tank he was driving fell into the Euphrates River. Private Givens drowned.

His death came on the same day President Bush declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq.

Givens was the first Fort Carson soldier to die in the Iraq war and the post's first fatality since the Vietnam War. Since his death, 44 Fort Carson soldiers have been killed in action.

Private Givens is survived by his wife, son, and step-son.

He was 34.
