Winter hasn't officially started, but already more and more families are signing up for energy assistance.

One program available in Southern Colorado is LEAP, or Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

It helps pay a portion of your heating bill.

Melinda Bennett is the manager of the El Paso County LEAP office. She has seen a 57% increase in applications so far this year.

"Because there are so many people who are unemployed, it's very very hard to keep up with your mortgage and pay for your utility expenses as well," says Bennett.

There are income requirements to qualify, for example, a family of four cannot make more than $3,400 a month.

Assistance can range from $300 to $900 depending on your situation and level of need, but it is only a one-time benefit.

The program runs through April 30th, and there are a couple ways to sign up.

To request an application in the mail, call 1-866-432-8435.

You can also apply online at www.seamlesscompassion.org/leap.
