Jail Expansion

Residents in El Paso County will get to decide this November whether it's worth expanding the county jail.

Preliminary figures indicate the project could cost at least $38 million and another $2.8 million a year to help run the expansion.

County Commissioner Jeri Howells says that while the crowding is
bad, the county must make sure all the other options are examined.

She says that doing more electronic monitoring of inmates. To ease overcrowding the county has also been letting some people convicted on drug charges to remain free as long as they receive treatment.
