La Plata County Considers Tax Increase

Updated: Sat 5:26 PM, Jul 27, 2002

(Durango-AP) -- La Plata County Commissioners are considering asking voters to temporarily increase their property taxes to help pay for this year's firefighting costs.

County commissioners also have decided to lift a ban on charcoal barbecue grills, and provided residents with tips to use the grills safely.

Commissioner Bob Lieb says the tax-increase proposal wouldn't go to voters in November unless it gets unanimous support from the commissioners. County officials don't know yet how much the county's share will be for costs of fighting the 77-thousand-acre Missionary Ridge fire and cleaning up afterward.

Commissioners have voted to give notice to elections officials that they intend to place at least one question on the November ballot. Officials say the question or questions will be decided later.
