Pueblo City School District 60 surprised administrators at East High School Thursday with an impromptu lockdown drill. It was part of an ongoing effort to see if schools are all on the same page with a new emergency plan. Earlier this week South High School was put through the same test and passed with flying colors.

Within minutes of announcing the drill had begun, two teams swept the campus looking for vulnerable spots. Some were found, like an unsecured door, propped open by construction workers at the school. Another was the door to the media center. It was left open and two students were still inside unaware the drill had begun. Bringing these issues to light helps the school address them and prepare for future drills.

While it's rare schools are locked down, administrators want parents to know they take the procedure very seriously. After the recent massacre at Fort Hood, the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007, and the attack at Columbine 10 years ago, school officials cannot stress enough how important it is that everyone is prepared.

Meanwhile, students have interesting views on the drills. Several students KKTV talked to admitted many kids don't take the drills seriously. This puts pressure on administrators to ensure students and faculty don't become complacent. Still, students who do take the drills seriously are thankful for them. "Afterwards it's kind of relieving and your like, well I know I'm safe here, they won't let anything happen to me," says Tracey Versteeg, a Senior at East.

"I think that it's important that we do them because we don't know when something bad's going to happen, and we should practice it alot more often," says Stephanie Truong, also a Junior at East.

"I live on the east side so I see that stuff every night. I hear the gun shots. You never know if someone wants to come to school [with] gang related stuff, and start problems," says Daryion Morgan, a Junior at East.

District 60 plans to continue to hold surprise lockdown drills throughout the school year.

Meanwhile, District 70 locked down one of their schools Thursday, but this one was not planned. Administrators at Pleasant View Middle School were given a note found in a hallway. The content of the note led officials to make the decision to lock the school down and conduct a search. They searched lockers, backpacks and the school grounds, but nothing threatening was found.

The lockdown was called off, and classes resumed. The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the matter.
