Bad news for movie fans: one of the most fattening snacks is the popcorn.

A new study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest finds that popcorn being served at most movie theaters is loaded with saturated fat and calories.

The study finds that a medium bag of popcorn with a soda can have the same amount of fat and calories as three McDonald's Quarter Pounders and a stick and a half of butter.

That's 1610 calories, and 60 grams of saturated fat. That's three day's worth of fat.

The study focused on the country's three largest theater chains. Regal and AMC pop their corn in coconut oil. Cinemark Theaters use canola oil.

Researchers found a large popcorn cooked in coconut oil with "buttery topping" has about 1200 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat. Popcorn made with canola oil is much lower in fat, but still pack on calories. And the butter flavoring adds 130 calories by the spoonful.

Researchers say the only healthy snack at most movie theaters may be no snack at all.

Heaven forbid people actually be allowed to just enjoy their life a little once in a while, without being constantly bombarded with dire warnings about how everything on earth is either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And eating something fattening or, heaven forbid, being fat is considered the newest mortal sin that you need to be crucified for. Everyone dies. Spending your life constantly restricting your diet, eating things with the flavor and texture of twigs and dried grass, and running around the neighborhood dressed in spandex like a superhero reject might, maybe, add 10 years to your life. Or you could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Relax, slow down, and don't obsess over if one bag of popcorn at the movies is going to kill you. It won't.
